How to find the right driver for your webcam
-
Detect your cameras. Click Detect my cameras and allow camera access. Each camera turns on for a moment and then switches off again.
-
Read the results. You’ll see each camera’s name, USB ID (in Chrome and Edge), likely manufacturer, maximum resolution and frame rate, a still frame and whether it works. Copy report copies the details for a support request.
-
Follow the link or the steps. If the camera works, you probably don’t need a driver. If not, open the official page shown for your camera, or follow Install or update the driver under the finder, which shows the steps for your system.
- Check it. After installing a driver, restart and check the live picture with the Webcam Test.
What the results mean
-
USB ID is the camera’s vendor and product code, such as
046d:0825. The first four characters identify the maker —046dis Logitech. Not reported means the browser didn’t share it. - Manufacturer comes from that ID or the camera name. Built-in laptop cameras often report the maker of the camera part, such as Realtek or Chicony, but their drivers come from your laptop maker.
- Works means the driver is installed and the camera sends a picture. Other results are explained in the troubleshooting steps below.
- Virtual cameras such as OBS Virtual Camera are made by software and have no hardware driver — update or reinstall the app instead.
What is a webcam driver?
A webcam driver is the software that lets your operating system talk to the camera. Almost every modern USB webcam follows the USB Video Class (UVC) standard, so Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS run it with a generic driver that is already built in — on Windows it’s called USB Video Device. Plug the camera in and it works.
Apps such as Logitech G HUB, Logi Tune or Razer Synapse are not drivers: they add camera controls and firmware updates. The exception is some newer laptops whose built-in camera connects directly to the processor (MIPI cameras); those need the exact driver from the laptop maker, usually through Windows Update.
How to update webcam drivers on Windows 11 and 10
1. Check Windows Update
- Windows 11: open Settings › Windows Update › Advanced options › Optional updates and expand Driver updates. Windows 10: open Settings › Update & Security › Windows Update › View optional updates.
- Tick any camera, imaging or chipset driver from your PC maker and select Download & install.
- Restart your PC, even if Windows doesn’t ask you to.
Microsoft explains this in more detail in Automatically get recommended and updated hardware drivers.
2. Update, roll back or reinstall in Device Manager
- Right-click Start › Device Manager and expand Cameras (older drivers appear under Imaging devices).
- To update, right-click your camera › Update driver › Search automatically for drivers.
- If it broke after an update, right-click › Properties › Driver › Roll Back Driver.
- To reinstall, right-click › Uninstall device and restart — Windows installs the driver again.
- Camera not listed? Choose Action › Scan for hardware changes and View › Show hidden devices.
See Microsoft’s guide: Update drivers through Device Manager in Windows.
3. Switch to the generic “USB Video Device” driver
If a manufacturer’s driver is broken or a USB webcam shows a yellow warning icon, switch it to the driver built into Windows: right-click the camera › Update driver › Browse my computer for drivers › Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer, select USB Video Device and click Next. This works for any UVC webcam.
4. Download from the official manufacturer site
If Windows Update has nothing, get the driver from the webcam maker — or, for a built-in camera, your laptop maker. Have the model or serial number ready.
| Brand | Official drivers and software | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Logitech | Logitech software, G HUB, Logi Tune | Webcams use the built-in UVC driver. G HUB is now the main app for many Logitech cameras, replacing Logitech Capture; Logi Tune is for business webcams. |
| Microsoft LifeCam | Microsoft Update Catalog | No separate software is needed on Windows 11 and 10; drivers come through Windows Update. |
| Microsoft Surface | Surface drivers and firmware | Download the driver and firmware package for your Surface model. |
| HP | HP Software and Driver Downloads | Enter your laptop or webcam model, or its serial number. |
| Dell | Dell Drivers & Downloads | Enter your Service Tag or model to see drivers for your PC. |
| Lenovo | Lenovo Support downloads | Enter your serial number or model. Lenovo System Update maintenance ends on 31 October 2026; Lenovo recommends Commercial Vantage instead. |
| ASUS | ASUS Download Center | Search for your model and open its drivers section. |
| Acer | Acer Drivers and Manuals | Enter your serial number, SNID or model. |
| Razer | Razer Synapse 4 | Webcams use the built-in driver; Synapse adds settings and firmware updates for supported Razer cameras. |
Avoid “driver updater” programs and third-party driver download sites. They can install the wrong driver, bundle unwanted software or charge for drivers that are free. Use Windows Update, the Microsoft Update Catalog or the manufacturer’s own website.
Webcam not working? Fix it step by step
-
Read the message on the finder. Camera access blocked means your browser or system stops websites from using the camera (steps 2–3). The driver steps under the finder work without camera access.
-
Allow the camera in your browser. Click the icon to the left of the address bar, open Site settings (or Permissions) and set Camera to Allow. Reload the page and press Detect my cameras again.
Chrome and Edge site settings. In Firefox and Safari, click the camera icon in the address bar instead. - Allow apps to use the camera in your system. Windows 11: Settings › Privacy & security › Camera — turn on Camera access and Let desktop apps access your camera. Windows 10: Settings › Privacy › Camera. Mac: System Settings › Privacy & Security › Camera — turn on your browser, then quit and reopen it.
-
Black picture? Open the shutter. The camera works but sees nothing. Check for a sliding cover over the lens, a camera key on the keyboard (often an F key with a camera icon) or a switch on the side, and turn on a light.
- Can’t start? Close other apps. Another app is probably using the camera. Close Zoom, Teams, OBS or the Camera app and press Scan again.
-
No camera found? Reconnect it. A camera key or switch can hide the camera from Windows completely. Plug USB webcams straight into the computer, not a hub, and try another port. In Device Manager, choose Action › Scan for hardware changes.
- Update or reinstall the driver through Windows Update or Device Manager as described above, then restart.
- Check your antivirus. Webcam protection in some security suites blocks unknown apps — allow your browser.
- Still stuck? Follow Microsoft’s Camera doesn’t work in Windows guide.
Webcam drivers on Mac, Linux and Chromebook
- Mac: nothing to install — the FaceTime camera and UVC webcams use drivers built into macOS. If an app can’t see the camera, allow it in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Camera.
-
Linux: UVC webcams use the kernel’s
uvcvideodriver; check the camera withlsusbandv4l2-ctl --list-devices. Some laptops with Intel IPU6 (MIPI) cameras need extra packages. - Chromebook, Android, iPhone and iPad: camera drivers are part of the system and arrive with system updates. Check the site’s camera permission and the system privacy toggles.
About this webcam driver finder
Everything runs in your browser: the finder reads each camera’s name, USB ID and capabilities, takes a still frame to confirm the picture and switches the camera off. Nothing is recorded or uploaded.
A website can’t install drivers, so it points you to Windows Update and official manufacturer pages instead. It works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on any system.
Frequently asked questions
What is a webcam driver?
A webcam driver is the software that lets Windows, macOS or Linux communicate with your camera. Most USB webcams use the standard UVC driver that is built into the operating system, so you never have to install one yourself.
Does a webcam need a driver?
Every webcam needs a driver, but almost all USB webcams use the generic one built into Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS, so there’s nothing to download. Maker apps such as Logitech G HUB or Razer Synapse are optional and only add extra settings.
How do I update my webcam driver on Windows 11 or 10?
Open Settings › Windows Update › Advanced options › Optional updates (on Windows 10, View optional updates) and install any camera driver listed. You can also right-click the camera in Device Manager, choose Update driver › Search automatically for drivers, then restart.
How do I find the driver for my webcam?
Click Detect my cameras on this page to see your camera’s name, USB ID and likely manufacturer, with a link to the matching official driver page. For a built-in laptop camera, download the driver from your laptop maker’s support site using the model or serial number.
How do I reinstall my webcam driver?
In Device Manager, expand Cameras, right-click your camera and choose Uninstall device, then restart your PC. Windows reinstalls the driver automatically when it starts.
Are driver updater programs safe to use?
It’s best to avoid them. Third-party driver updaters and download sites can install the wrong driver or bundle unwanted software, while Windows Update and the manufacturer’s own website are free and safe.
