How to test your controller
- Connect the controller with a USB data cable or over Bluetooth (pair it in your system’s Bluetooth settings first).
-
Press any button. Browsers only reveal a controller after you press one of its buttons while the page is open. Until then the tester waits; then the diagram appears and the controller’s name shows in the menu.
-
Press every button and pull both triggers. A button lights up blue while pressed and turns green once it has worked. The triggers fill as you pull them, from 0.00 to 1.00.
-
Check the sticks. Let go of both sticks and read the resting offset, then rotate each stick slowly around its outer edge to measure circularity.
Here the left stick is drifting: it rests outside the 0.10 deadzone while nobody touches it. -
Test vibration. Choose the weak motor, the strong motor or both, and set the duration and strength. The details panel shows whether your browser and controller support vibration.
-
Match your controller. The labels switch to Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo automatically where the controller can be recognised; you can also pick them yourself. With several controllers connected, pick one from the menu.
Stick drift and the deadzone
Stick drift is when a stick reports movement while nobody touches it — your character creeps forward or the camera slowly turns. Leave the sticks alone and read the Resting offset: 0 is perfectly centred and 1 is full tilt. If the offset stays outside the deadzone while the stick is untouched, the tester marks it as drift.
The Deadzone slider sets how much movement around the centre is ignored, like the deadzone setting in many games. If a slightly bigger in-game deadzone hides the drift, that may be all you need. A large or growing offset usually means the stick needs cleaning or replacing.
Circularity and raw values
Rotating a stick around its edge draws its outline. The Circularity error is the average gap between that outline and a perfect circle, so lower is better. Some controllers are built with squarer outlines, so compare the left and right sticks, or two controllers of the same model, rather than aiming for 0%.
The raw tables list every button the browser reports (value 0 to 1) and every axis (−1 to 1). They are the best way to check controllers without the standard layout, such as flight sticks, wheels, arcade sticks and older USB pads.
Controller not detected or wrong buttons? Fix it step by step
- Press a button after the page has loaded. Plugging the controller in isn’t enough for the browser to show it. If the tester still says Waiting for a controller, press a few buttons, then click Detect controller.
- Check the cable and port. Some USB cables only charge, so try a data cable you know works. Plug it straight into the computer, not into an unpowered hub, and try another port.
- Pair it again over Bluetooth. Put the controller in pairing mode — PS5 DualSense / PS4 DualShock 4: hold the PS button and Create (Share on PS4) until the light bar flashes; Xbox: hold the pair button on top until the Xbox button flashes quickly; Switch Pro Controller: hold the small sync button on top. Then add it in Windows 11: Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Add device; Mac: System Settings › Bluetooth; Android: Settings › Connected devices › Pair new device; iPhone and iPad: Settings › Bluetooth.
- Close Steam or turn off Steam Input. If Steam is running, it may take over the controller and present it as a different one. Close it, or turn off Steam Input for this controller, to test the hardware itself.
-
Wrong buttons light up? If the status says Connected — non-standard mapping, your browser doesn’t recognise the controller’s layout, so the diagram may not match. Try Chrome or Edge, which recognise the most controllers. Firefox and Safari show some controllers this way.
-
Use the raw tables. Every button and axis the browser reports is listed with its live value, so you can still check each one, even on flight sticks, wheels and older USB pads.
-
No vibration? If the Vibration panel says Vibration isn’t available, the browser or controller doesn’t support it. Use Chrome or Edge with an Xbox or PlayStation controller; Firefox doesn’t support vibration.
USB or Bluetooth?
A USB cable is the most reliable way to test: there is no pairing, no battery drain and no wireless dropouts. Bluetooth is fine for everyday play, but if a controller disconnects, lags or won’t vibrate wirelessly, connect it by cable to see whether the problem is the controller or the connection.
About this gamepad tester
This free controller tester runs in your browser using the Gamepad API — no app or driver download needed, and nothing is sent anywhere. It reads the controller only while this tab is open and visible.
It works with Xbox Series and Xbox One controllers, PS5 DualSense, PS4 DualShock 4, Switch Pro Controller, 8BitDo, Logitech and most other USB and Bluetooth gamepads, on Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS and Android, and on iPhone and iPad with supported controllers. Chrome and Edge give the most complete results, including vibration.
Frequently asked questions
How do I test my PS5 controller on a PC?
Connect the DualSense with a USB cable or pair it over Bluetooth, open this page in Chrome or Edge and press any button. Switch the labels to PlayStation, then press every button, check both sticks for drift and test vibration.
How do I check my controller for stick drift?
Let go of both sticks and watch the Resting offset. A centred stick reads close to 0. If the value stays above the deadzone while the stick is untouched, the stick is drifting.
Why isn’t my controller detected?
Browsers only show a controller after you press one of its buttons with the page open. If it still doesn’t appear, try another cable or USB port, re-pair it over Bluetooth, and close Steam or other apps that may take control of it.
Can I test controller vibration online?
Yes, in Chrome and Edge with most Xbox and PlayStation controllers, and with some controllers in Safari. Use the weak, strong or both-motor buttons; if your controller and browser support it, the trigger motors can be tested too. Firefox doesn’t support vibration.
Does the gamepad tester work on a Mac or phone?
Yes. On a Mac, use Chrome, Edge or Safari. On Android, connect the controller by Bluetooth or USB and use Chrome. On iPhone and iPad, pair a supported Xbox or PlayStation controller and use Safari.
What do the raw button and axis values mean?
Each button reports a value from 0 (released) to 1 (fully pressed); analog triggers show the values in between. Each axis reports −1 to 1, where 0 is the centre of a stick.
